"The canvas is a place where one must give oneself completely, to surrender to the moment and let the painting take over."
Nicolas de Staël (1914–1955) was a French painter of Russian origin known for his bold abstract work. Born in Saint Petersburg, he moved to Belgium after the Russian Revolution and later studied in Paris. De Staël’s art is characterized by vibrant colors, thick textures, and a sculptural approach to painting. His major works include "La Vie en Bleu" (1950) and "Le Parc des Princes" (1952).
He gained prominence in the 1940s and 1950s with exhibitions at Galerie Denise René in Paris and the Venice Biennale. Despite his success, De Staël struggled with personal issues and died by suicide in 1955. His innovative approach to abstraction and his emotional depth continue to influence modern art. His works are featured in major collections, including the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
